Growing up in a sports family provided Dei Lynam career focus from an early age. Her father Jim, was a coach in college and pro, most notably as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and then Washington Bullets in the 1980s and 90s.
But it was Jim's first assistant job in the NBA that gave Dei the bug for the sports industry. When he was named an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers, Dei, just 15 years old, began working with the Blazers production crew, holding the mic in team huddles. She was hooked!
Since those teenage years, Dei's career has flourished. Executive producer for NBA Entertainment, sports anchor, sideline reporter, analyst, radio host - she has done it all. For 20 years she was a fixture with the Philadelphia 76ers as a sideline reporter for Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia, building relationships with some of the most iconic stars in the NBA stage including Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, and Charles Barkley.
Instructor Dr. Lynn Lashbrook, with over 40 years in Sports Management, has created and developed many college sports broadcasting programs and sponsorships. While Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Missouri, Dr. Lashbrook helped the University become the first college to commission Learfield Sports Network to control their entire statewide radio network. Learfield Sports now handles multimedia and marketing for many of the top colleges and universities in the country.
Dr. Lashbrook's passionate teaching style will motivate you to make sports broadcasting work for you and your individual situation. He and Dei Lynam will unite students in the course with live weekly zoom video chats so that they can share their play by play successes and blunders, learn from experts in the field and empower students in their Sports Broadcasting careers. Sports radio and television continue to expand in their reach, and you can be at the forefront of this growth. Our Sports Broadcasting course will provide an introduction to the methods and skills necessary to produce and anchor sports radio shows.
At the conclusion of the course, students will have the tools to start their own sports broadcast via the Internet, from any sports venue. They will have a well-rounded understanding of the methods used by professional analysts and broadcasters who have successfully created their own style.
Students will be encouraged to participate from the press box on a prearranged game day. Course work will include a required job shadow with the play by play announcer at a local venue. This may include minor league or collegiate sports.
Students will be creating sports broadcasting audio resumes and work samples for evaluation and learning. This is done via the internet and will give fellow students and faculty the opportunity to critique and assist the student in improving their voice quality and on-air personality. Techniques to practice and improve will be shared.
Students will be introduced to a variety of radio sponsorship packages. This includes packages ranging from national ad campaigns to small sports venue packages.
A unique aspect of each 8-week course is the opportunity for students to participate in weekly, interactive zoom video chats with fellow students, Dei Lynam, Dr. Lynn Lashbrook, and renowned guest speakers. This is a tremendous opportunity to network within the professional sports broadcasting industry by getting to know your instructors and fellow students personally.

Dear Potential Sports Broadcasting Student:
The only radio work I was doing was a "great pretend job" in my car as I drove around. I had always wanted to do sports broadcasting. ESPN became a local station in my town here in South Carolina. I listened all 8 hours during my job. That's when I heard the SMWW commercial. I thought about it, but told myself I didn't have the time, nor the money. Well, a few months later I heard the ad again. I looked up the website on the computer and liked what I read.
I signed up and received my material a week or two before classes started. I loved the exercises assigned by the instructors and the materials. I called my local show host to do my work study portion of the course and worked with them on my project. This really made me feel that I could be a sports radio show host!
I called several stations trying to get some air time. Nobody was interested. But I didn't give up.
Well, about this time a sales man at the station 100.1 The Fan got an opportunity to do a trial show. I emailed them an explained that I had received SMWW Sports Broadcasting training and just wanted to sit in on the show a couple of times. From my training at SMWW, they were impressed, and asked the production manager if I go on the air the next week. I then went on from guest hosting on Tuesdays, to Tuesdays and Thursdays! The show is, "The Open Mike" with Mike and Lee, and I am the guest host Mic'T.
Recently I have gone out on my own, and I am the sole proprietor of "Onda Ball Sportz". Thanks to the training at SMWW, I have just worked out my advertisement agreements, and developed a show format. I have negotiated and am in the progress of broadcasting my own show "Bleecher Talk". It will be simulcast on two am stations in two separate towns. Once the show get's going, I will do daily or bi-weekly sports updates for the station.
Thanks to my training at SMWW, I am negotiating with a local business to back a local high school and I will broadcast their football games.

The SMWW course has taught me the world of sports broadcasting. The importance of being informative is probably the most important thing I learned. Another key point is who you know to land a job.
